Nighttime rates to cut the costs of artificial farming of leafy vegetables without damaging plants.

The costs of leafy green vegetables production under artificial light can be reduced by a quarter when using low-rate electricity from the grid during low demand hours. The related disruption of the normal lighting regime will not hinder healthy plant growth. The saving associated with the use of artificial lighting during the experiments was between 17% and 23%, resulting from the application of hourly rates as well as participation in long-term demand management programs where the supplier has the discretion to set the “dark” (i.e. “cheap”) rates several times a month.
